Do Smart Thermostats Work and Why Do You Need One in Sunrise, FL?

The smart home market was at $78.2 billion in 2020, and Business Wire projects that the market will grow to $135.3 billion globally by 2025. Smart thermostats are some of the devices that contribute to the growth of the industry and offer convenience to homeowners in Sunrise, FL. But what are these smart thermostats, and how do they operate in a home?

What Are Smart Thermostats?

In a study published in the Journal of Energy Research & Social Science, 42% of 192 American research subjects said they use programmable thermostats. However, 39% of users don’t program them because they either don’t know where the settings are or don’t know how to set them. Many respondents had thermostats set on hold mode, which turns them into manual devices.

The smart thermostat solves the challenges of programmable thermostats by allowing homeowners to control temperatures in a home remotely. Most of these thermostats feature a Wi-Fi chip, but others may have a different communication hub, such as the Z-wave protocol. With an internet connection, you can control the thermostat through an app.

Better still, these thermostats have learning algorithms that help you set efficient schedules. Further, the thermostats may connect to other smart devices in a home, such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home, allowing you to control the thermostat using your voice.

How Do Smart Thermostats Work?

Smart thermostats connect to the internet, allowing you to access them via a mobile app. As a homeowner, you need to enter your desired home temperature and define your daily schedule via the app. From the information you feed to the thermostat, it will keep the temperatures lower or higher when you are away and raise or lower the temperature to a comfortable level when you get home.

These thermostats also have learning features, which learn your schedules and create the most efficient heating and conditioning settings. The thermostat can use geofencing capabilities or other third-party integrations to “know” when you are home and when you are away.

The thermostat will also keep track of your preferences. It can log all your interactions with it, learn what you like and adjust the temperatures of your home autonomously. It can even give you suggestions on how to keep your home comfortable.

Further, the thermostat learns how long it takes to heat up your rooms by collecting historical data from them. This way, it knows when to turn up or down the temperature of your room before you get home.

Why Do You Need a Smart Thermostat?

Ecobee, one of the smart thermostat companies, estimates that you can save up to 26% on HVAC costs when you use a smart thermostat. Nest, a competitor of Ecobee, estimates that you can save up to 15% on cooling and up to 12% on heating. However, the smart thermostat will only save you energy within the boundaries you set.

When you lower the temperature by 1 degree for about eight hours when you are away, you save about 2% of your energy bills. The 2% savings might not sound like much, but if you are away from home nine hours a day and you sleep seven hours a day, the savings can be as high as 18%. Assuming you lower the temperature by 8 degrees during the day and 4 degrees when you sleep, you can save that much on your utility bill.

Smart thermostats are also easier to control, as all you need is an app whether you’re home or away. The interface for most of these apps is simple. Further, the app will give you suggestions and prompt you to click yes or no.

With the intuitive interface, you’ll find it easier to control the temperature in your home for energy savings. If you have a mini-split system with multiple thermostats, you can still control them for better temperature control.
